The American Dream is created by people who want to achieve success in their lives. Whether is it to be wealthy, further your education, make a better life for yourself, family, and generations beyond, or just overall being happy. The dream is what motivates people to work hard in life. Everyone wants to be successful, but does everyone have the access to achieve that goal? Pursuing opportunity is no longer the main focus of the American Dream but rather learning how to earn it then take hold of it. Andrew Carnegie was born in 1835 and Scotland. At age 13 he moved to the US and started working at a cotton factory at a wage of $1.20. Carnegie is now considered one of the most wealthiest men of the 18th century. Oprah Winfrey, an African American woman, was born in the year 1954 in rural Mississippi. She was born into a very poor family where clothes and food were considered luxury items. In 1976, she moved to Baltimore to host a talk show. This move started Oprah’s career and had made her one of the most wealthiest women to ever live in America. Surowiecki also announced that “ Seventy percent of people born into the bottom quintile of income distribution never make it into the middle class, and fewer than ten percent get into the top quintile. Forty percent are still poor as adults.” This a true statement only because, the access to a real opportunity to advance in life is given to people whose family starts off wealthy, whereas is deprived from everyone else.
