I knew that you had thought that something much worse had happened to my father that night and that was the cause of your disappearance, but this didn’t dishearten me. I was determined to find you.
The night you vanished, I was coming down stairs to see what was causing the commotion, and saw that a guy laid spread-eagled on the floor. I started over towards Mr Kulkarni to ask him what had happened, when I saw you running out the chawl. I thought nothing of it at the time, but the longer you were gone from the chawl, the more worried for you I got.’
‘I’m sorry I never told you where I was going but I had to get out of there.’
‘One day my father finally told us what happened that night. That is how I came to the conclusion that you thought you must have killed my father or something. Also, I now knew why you had run away and why my father had stopped abusing my mother and me.
I often wondered where you had gotten to and always hoped that nothing bad had happened to you. I would sometimes go visit Salim and ask him if he had any news from you, but his answer was always the same. A year had past and neither one of us had heard from you, and it was time for me to go to university. However, just before I left my father started drinking again. He was sad that I was leaving and thought that alcohol would solve this problem. He often came home drunk, he would yell at people and pass out in random and inappropriate places.
