The Criminal Justice System Is Racist

In 2010 the U.S. Sentencing Commission reported that African-Americans received 10% longer sentences than whites through the federal system for the same crimes (11 Facts About Racial Discrimination). The criminal justice system has created and perpetuated a racial hierarchy in the United States. Some Americans are unaware of mass incarceration numbers and racism that occurs in the criminal justice system. Also, African-Americans are criminalized and targeted because of their skin color. It is easy to see that the Criminal Justice System is racist and biased because of high minority incarceration rates, several instances of racial discrimination, and a lack of juries that include minority "peers." This is important because people should be assessed equally for committing a crime . Also, racism is a completely incorrect theory that has been the cause of so much evil in the world. With so many people being looked at differently in the world it brings chaos to them.

The extremely high minority incarceration rates in our prisons show a clear bias within court sentencing. “In 2010, the incarceration rate for white men under local, state and federal jurisdiction was 678 inmates per 100,000 white U.S. residents; for black men, it was 4,347 inmates per 100,000 ” (Drake). We can see that even in 2010,that African-American incarceration rates were higher than whites per 100,000. This is a very alarming rate for African-Americans. For many…
