The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment. During this interaction, the child will be able to accommodate and learn (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p. 79).
Additionally, at the age of four children are developing gross and fine motor skills. These developing skills will have focus during the day. Some of these gross skills include walking up while alternating feet, walking on tiptoes, throwing, buttoning clothes, tying knots, and dressing/undressing. Some of the fine skills include completing simple puzzles, using art materials, and coordinating scissors (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p. 83).
All activities will incorporate the process of adaptation, assimilation, and accommodation to help children get through each of the steps to reach accommodation. The activities will be developmentally appropriate for their level of gross and fine motor skill development. Furthermore, all the activity designs are around exploratory play.
