The idea of teaching the community about childhood obesity has been considered as one of the greatest opportunities for me to express myself the lifestyle that is crippling most of the people in this country. Childhood obesity has been on the rise. “The prevalence of obesity in children more than tripled from 1971 to 2011”, (American Heart Association, 2015, pp 1).Most children in the New York City are obese. Especially my neighborhood, it`s mostly Hispanics, Africans and African Americans. The private child care center used is mostly Hispanics but few Blacks and Whites. Looking at the demographics, obesity is prevalent among the Hispanics and African Americans. Most children at this school are obese. This is mostly due lack of education, poverty, lack of access to health care due to their immigration status or no insurance coverage to help combat the problem. So taking time teaching the children and parents was a great privilege both for them and me. Using the power point presentation with colorful pictures engaged the children and also the parents into the lesson. Time laps so quick. It felt like 10 minutes. The parents were given an opportunity to ask questions. Even after the lesson, some parents came up to me to ask questions. I gave them all my time and answered according to what I know.
