The idea of teaching the community about childhood obesity has been considered as one of the greatest opportunities for me to express myself the lifestyle that is crippling most of the people in this country. Childhood obesity has been on the rise. “The prevalence of obesity in children more than tripled from 1971 to 2011”, (American Heart Association, 2015, pp 1).Most children in the New York City are obese. Especially my neighborhood, it`s mostly Hispanics, Africans and African Americans. The private child care center used is mostly Hispanics but few Blacks and Whites. Now childhood obesity is a serious medical condition crippling most children at their tender age in this country. This happens when a child is way above the normal weight and height. Childhood obesity is very troublesome as having extra pounds often starts children on the road to troubled life of health problems that are mostly confined to adults like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, poor self-esteem and depression. Not every child who carries extra pounds are obese. For example, my twins are very tall and skinny. They are 3 year old but looks like 5 year old. But they weigh more than what they are suppose to. In these situations, the doctor helps to figure out using the growth chart. If the child is obese or overweight or not before problems starts arising in the child. Most of them thought being obese is healthy as they are mostly immigrants. They promised to change their lifestyles. To be more cautious about what they give their children. Some parents who were obese too, also promised to lose few pounds. They promised to be more active as they are the examples to their children and also involve the children too.
Areas of strengths and areas of improvement Areas of strengths were the way I presented the teaching was very impressive such that the children became so interested in listening to the presentation. Especially the use of the colorful pictures on the presentation attracted them a lot. Areas of improvement was the use of the projector for the presentation was a little bit hard to do because they was my first time to do it so one of the teachers had to help. But became easier as began the presentation. Also getting to be bilingual will be a good idea because some of the words parents could not understand, the Spanish teacher was helping to
