What are the challenges to living an ethical life? This essay explores the answer to this question. But in order for one to explain the challenges of living an ethical life one must first describe what an ethical life is. It is important to understand that one does not have to strive to live an entire life with an ethical goal, for that makes it more difficult or challenging and less appealing to people, instead an ethical life should be one in which people occasionally attempt to achieve ethical actions, ones that restore their souls lightly. Charlene had written her a letter telling her she knew that she was Special. Was Marlene special? She never wanted to get married, and though it may have seemed as if it was due to feminist ideals, there was also a sentiment of emotional separation between herself and anything in the world. She even regarded her mother as a challenge instead of as a source of love. Does this then justify her being a murderer, and never having truly committing altruistic acts? Does it also prohibit people like Verna from being ethical?
One could argue that, no, Marlene should have realized and recognized and accepted and repented her actions. She just decided not to. Others also exist that cannot allow themselves to be recognized as being in the wrong and must instead place the blame upon another being or another entity or power. Those that are like Verna, however, are different. Their impediments towards living an ethical life are different. Their actions need not be as great as the actions of others, for some they cannot do much, but if they attempt with what they can do that is enough.
Beyond those like Verna and Marlene, there are those that also do not have enough economically speaking, and they have similar impediments. It is harder to do a truly altruistic act when you do not have. They too, when they perform a minor act of altruism, they deserve the recognition for their attempt in the same way, never demeaning but always recognizing.
