Life is not black and white: It is a complex system made up of everything in between. Every day we face decisions, problems and dilemmas. Childcare in Australia is diverse, we are lucky to live in a society that embraces all aspects of children and the families we educate. Celebrating, supporting and accepting this melange of children, parents, educators and the wider community is rewarding and sometimes challenging. Our own views and experiences along with legal aspects shape the way we perceive things to be right and wrong. Individuals hold distinct values and often conclude their interpretation of the world is true and right. It is this complex fusion of values and beliefs that lead to ethical dilemmas. As educators, we are governed by external influences that assist us in making quality decisions that strengthen the rights of the children we educate. Ethical dilemmas have several dimensions to consider with each individual perspective having valid considerations. The dimensions of this dilemma included the perspective of the director, children, parents and educators both for and against calling Australia day the day Australia was discovered. Different dimensions and roles made it a dilemma because of the emotional response it provokes in each party, both sides to the dilemma had valid points to consider and deliberate over.
