The Causes of Child Obesity
I. Thesis: The rates of child obesity have been increasing in America due to lack of diet, exercise, and psychosocial environments. The parent’s responsibility is to try and instill in their children healthy eating habits, importance of physical activity, and being the proper role model so when the child is not with the parent, the child will hopefully be mindful of what they were taught.
II. Many children in America are obese and child obesity leads to many health issues.
A. There are more than nine million children between the ages of six and nine that are considered overweight. Children who are considered obese are 70% more likely to continue being obese into adulthood (“Obesity Statistics”).
B. Obese children are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The highest rates of child obesity are seen in African Americans, Hispanics, and Native American; 25% of children in these ethnics groups are affected by obesity.
C. Children with obesity experience poor self-esteem and depression.
D. More than 40% of children watch two hours or more of TV each day (“Obesity Statistics”).
1. There are five myths about obesity. a. Many people eat out and restaurant meals usually have more calories than what we prepare at home. Therefore, people who eat out more frequently have higher rates of obesity than those who eat out less.
b. People won’t lose weight by trying to eat less because they cannot easily control themselves.
