It was Idolatry. This was the biggest issue that the Jews faced. Furthermore, Idolatry has really always been an issue with the Jewish people. Even though the Jewish people did not know God knew; therefore, He was prepared and He prepared His people. Furthermore, there were many nations that surrounded Israel and God gave instruction during the time of the Exodus as to what might happen. He told the people in Exodus 20: 4-6 (New International Version), thaturthermore, in Jeremiah 44:2-6 (New International Version), it says that “this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah. Today they lie deserted and in ruins because of the evil they have done. They aroused my anger by burning incense to and worshiping other gods that neither they nor you nor your ancestors ever knew. Again and again I sent my servants the prophets, who said, ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate!’ But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods. When people worship other Gods and choose not to follow God's plan, then, bad things will begin to happen. Furthermore, In addition to Israel worshipping other Gods, God was very offended by the fact that people offered sacrifices just for ritualism but because they loved God. They definitely were not joyfully giving to Him. He does state in 2 Corinthians 9:7 (New International Version), that Therefore, when sin enters, the enemy takes away the joy. Knowing what the prophets had to say about these issues, the practical applications that can be drawn from those teachings are very similar to today’s society.
