Jeremiah Jeremiah was born in 645 BC. He was born into a priestly family from a northern Israelite tribe. He was very young when God called for him to become a prophet for him. Jeremiah would then preach about Israel and how they needed to turn towards God in hopes things would improve. He loved his people so much that Jeremiah is sometimes called the weeping prophet because he knew about their fast approaching doom and the Babylonian Exile and felt sorry for them. Through this he remains faithful to God, strong, courageous, and perseverant. During Jeremiah’s time King Josiah ruled the southern kingdom of Judah. King Josiah was a great king with many great accomplishments including expanding Judah’s territory. Jeremiah liked King Josiah, but he was afraid that King Josiah was not doing enough and time was running out to turn the people back to God. Sadly, King Josiah was killed in battle, and things took a turn for the worse. Kings Jehoiakim and Zedekiah were the main rulers who came after King Josiah. God wanted Jeremiah to preach this message: “Turn back, each of you, from your evil way and from your evil deeds; then you shall remain in the land which the Lord gave you and your ancestors.” (Jeremiah 25:5) God wanted him to preach this message to the people of Jerusalem. Unfortunately the people never listened to him. After the Babylonians took over he had a new message from god to tell the people: “you shall not be handed over to the men you dread. I will make certain that you escape and do not fall by the sword.” (Jeremiah 39:17-18) Jeremiah then gave the people hope that salvation was coming. Since the people did not listen to God’s first message they received the consequences Jeremiah was prophesizing the entire time to them. The consequences were: “Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, and his army marched against Jerusalem and placed it under siege.” (Jeremiah
