Next, as stated in the discussion board, I am a preacher’s kid so that means Christianity and prayer played a major role growing up. Both my mother and step father instilled in me that it is important to have a relationship with God. We went to bible study on Wednesday and service on Sunday. “The term “soul food” didn’t become common until the 1960s. With the rise of the civil rights and black nationalist movements during the 1960s, many African-Americans sought to re-claim their part of the American cultural legacy.” (Lynn, 2017) What foods do you think about when you hear soul food? One might say ham hocks, collard greens, black eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, chitterlings and the list goes on and on. Soul Food has been a part of my family for as far back as I can remember. I always know when there is a birthday, family reunion or a major holiday that my grandmother would throw down in the kitchen. Soul food not only brings joy to our stomach but also brings laughs, jokes and strengthen family connections.
