Some of these stereotypes are actually still going on today by some people. One stereotype that many people think of when they think of Native Americans is that they all live on the reservation. This is not a true statement, because there are actually many Native Americans who do not live on the reservation. According to Walter C. Fleming (2006), “57% of American Indians live in metropolitan areas…in some states in the West the majority of Native people do live on or near an Indian reservation” (Fleming, 2006). Another stereotype that people think of when they hear people talk about Native Americans is that they know about their culture and history. This is a stereotype because many children do not know about their heritage. There are many reasons why Native American children might not know of their heritage. A reason might be that their parents might not even know about their heritage since they could be from different tribes. Another reason could be, stated by Fleming (2006), “some parents do not know their own cultures because they were products of the boarding school system that discouraged traditional customs and traditions” (Fleming, 2006). Many people automatically think of African Americans or Native Americans, but there are actually many others. African Americans and Native Americans have gone through some pretty tragic things in order to be here today. They have many cultural and religious traditions. Many of them also continue to speak in their native language along with English. There are also many stereotypes that people often assume about people. If there are many similarities as well as differences between two minorities, imagine them with Caucasians. People need to realize that whether they are different skin color or have different religious views, they are just like everyone
