The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) indicate that, excellent leadership is crucial to ensure outstanding patient care. As a leader, the Nurse administrator (NA) is required to acquire the necessary competences to help them in their careers. The core competencies required for the NA include but not limited to communication and relationship-building, knowledge of the health care environment, leadership, professionalism, and business skills (AONE, 2011).

To begin with, the AGNP demonstrates competence in the nurse - patient relationship by attending to the patient’s responses to changes in health status and care. AGNP creates a climate of mutual trusting relationship that facilitates discussion of sensitive issues with the individual, family and other caregivers such as suicide prevention and self-injury (AACN, 2011). In comparison, the NA demonstrates competence in communication and relationship management. The NA builds trusting and collaborative relationship with nursing staff, physicians, and other disciplines and ancillary services. The NA care about people as individuals and demonstrates empathy and concern while ensuring that organizational goals and objectives are met (AONE, 2011). In contrast, while the NA engage staff and other disciplines in decision-making by proving an environment conducive to opinion-sharing, the AGNP preserves the patient’s control over decision making and negotiates a mutually acceptable plan of …show more content…
The AGNP considers cost, safety, effectiveness, and other options when recommending changes in care and practice (AACN, 2011). In comparison, the NA demonstrates competence in knowledge of the health care environment by articulating federal and state payment systems and regulations, as well as private insurance issues which affect organization’s finances. In contrast, the AGNP negotiates legislative change to influence health care delivery systems by advocating for access, quality, and cost-effective care within healthcare agencies and through professional organizations (AACN, 2011). On the other hand, the NA articulate federal and state laws and regulations that affect the provision of patient care such as tort reform and reimbursement.
