There are many various roles within healthcare that one can choose as a career path. Many choose a route that directly impacts patient care via treatment care plans while others choose to collaborate with other disciplines through an indirect patient care profession that impacts and improves the patient’s overall care experience. Regardless of the route, the goals in healthcare are the same, to provide safety and the highest level of patient-centered quality care (American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], 2015, p. 3). An FNP is involved in direct care activities such as advanced physical assessments, deciphering laboratory data, performing diagnostic procedures, and implementing pharmacological and holistic therapies which are a part of scientific practice competencies (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties [NONPF], 2014, p. 3). Using these competencies, a FNP can derive new interventions and develop new scientific information that can help the profession advance. It is the duty of the FNP to introduce new knowledge into the field. The FNP uses critical thinking not only in assessments but in the act of decision making in order to provide adequate interdisciplinary care. An FNP must demonstrate leadership capabilities while collaborating with others. While identifying diagnoses and treatment options for patients, one must demonstrate conflict management skills and be a change agent to guide the treatment plan towards a consensus in which all involved parties can agree to care plan goals (NONPF, 2014, p. 4). This role has many opportunities of advancement. Currently, the NE role is described as, “delivering safe, effective and efficient patient care by demonstrating excellence in leadership skills, principle, and comprehensive healthcare environment by use of communication and relationship management. The NE uses components of evidence-based practice, ethics, accountability, strategic management, mentoring, and team work building” (American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], 2016, p. 6). An example of an active role of leadership is that of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The NE receives certifications such as Nurse Executive-Board Certified (NE-BC) or once certification is obtained advance to Nurse Executive Advanced-Board Certified (NEA-BC). Another more common certification is to become Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP). Becoming certified within these roles opens new career venues for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) that want to advance from the direct clinical care provider advanced role to an executive level position in as an indirect care
