Family Nurse Practitioner vs. Nurse Administrator

There are many various roles within healthcare that one can choose as a career path. Many choose a route that directly impacts patient care via treatment care plans while others choose to collaborate with other disciplines through an indirect patient care profession that impacts and improves the patient’s overall care experience. Regardless of the route, the goals in healthcare are the same, to provide safety and the highest level of patient-centered quality care (American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], 2015, p. 3). Direct and indirect care roles are both beneficial and provide services to patients but do so in differing manners. Two roles that are essential in discussing and distinguish differences between are the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and the Nurse Executive (NE). Both professions have core competencies that vary and require one to abide by certain guidelines. Essentially, both are founded in the core competencies of nursing which are ethics, health promotion and education, management and leadership, research and personal effectiveness and professional development (The Nursing Council of Hong Kong [HKNC], 2012, p. 3).

Whether it is directly caring for patients or mentoring students, the FNP is a leader. The NE in many situations leads multiple Nurse Managers indirectly via the use of strategies and operational goals. Both roles are based on basics of Advanced Practice Nurse Core Competencies such as promoting leadership, collaboration, enhancing ethical decision making, practicing evidence-based practice, and guiding and coaching others (Hamric et al., 2014, p. 76).
