The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) guides Nurse Practitioners (NPs) to involve patients in decision-making.
The AANP effort is to promote active participation of patient and their families in decision-making.
Active patient and family participation enhances quality and safe care.

The AANP is governed by an elected Board of Directors.
The board of directors consist of a five member Executive Committee.
The president, president-elect, treasurer, recording secretary, and member at large are part of the executive committee

Selected from the current regional directors annually, the member-at-large serves on the executive committee.
The members of the Board of directors are elected .
Comprising of states in their geographic area, AANP is organized into 11 regions.
Elected by the AANP members, each region is represented by a director and each state includes one or more representatives.
