“Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the Bible says love your enemy.” Quote taken from Frank Sinatra, relates to how alcohol could be the downfall of a person, but at the same time, we continue to drink alcohol regardless of the negative effects. Alcohol consumption in America has been increasing in recent years. For this reason, this essay has the sole purpose of displaying the increased alcohol consumption. As well as revealing a new group of drinkers in America. This essay will also serve as a reminder of the negatives of alcohol consumption, and if possible, discover any possible positives attributed from alcoholic consumption.
Alcoholic consumption has always been at a steady pace in America. According to a Gallup poll, drinking was at it’s highest point in 1978 at 71%, and has been up and down until recent years. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), reports that 87.6% Americans at age 18+ have reported they have had a drink at least once in their life, while 71% has had a drink in the past year, and that 56.9% have reported to have had a drink in the past month. Binge drinkers at the ages 18+ have reported around 24.7%, and heavy drinkers at 6.7%. Alcoholic consumption in America is considered at an all time high, and to make matters worse is the increase of a new group of drinkers: the underaged.
