The Action of God and Not of Man
“Faith in the Lord Jesus Himself saves. And yet, such faith is based not only on who Jesus is, but on His finished work on the cross…, we are not saved by any theory of the Atonement, but by the actual death of Christ.” (Onken, B. ) There are many theories about what atonement mean. There have been many debates amongst scholars regarding the true theological view on it. Madison Trammel wrote: “Some theologians say that 'various biblical understandings of the atonement need not conflict.” Theologian Oliver Chase has said, “if we start from the fundamental and cardinal thought of God 's act of love in Jesus Christ ... I think we can reach a reconciling point of view, from which each type of theory is seen to make its essential contribution to the truth, although no one theory, no any number of theories, can be sufficient to express its fullness.” I understand atonement as one Christian Apologist, Mike Slick, he stated: “Atonement theologically speaks of God 's acting in human history to re-establish the original relationship between God and man by dealing with sin.” To get any form of understanding of what atonement means, believers and non-believers alike, must turn to scripture. Leviticus 17:11: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
