Reflective Essay On The Accidental Creative

What was your most recent creative thought? How did this thought arise in your head? Was it in the midst of a pressured brainstorming session or did it come about naturally in a quiet and private manner? People aren’t born creative. Although many of us like to think that creativity is a God given gift that only the talented few are lucky to posses, it’s not quite that simple. It is a personal ability that is developed over time based on daily habits and actions. Todd Henry in his book The Accidental Creative: How to be Brilliant at a Moment 's Notice, makes a strong claim that creativity is just the same as any other skill because it requires consistent attention and must be able to be apart of our everyday lives in order to build upon it. Right from the beginning Henry makes it very clear that regardless of whether or not you work in a specifically creative field—such as art or …show more content…
First off, I thought it was a rather easy read which made this process much more smooth and enjoyable than I had originally anticipated. My supervisor wanted to assign something to me that had to do with a broad concept that can be applied to an endless variety of people in different situations rather than a specific go to guide on the business of event planning and management. He thought that it would be much more effective for me to learn about a topic such as the creative mind that I can not only apply to the work I am doing for him, but to my everyday life as well. This read has definitely expanded my outlook on how I must structure myself for the entire length of my professional career. Although most of the ideas and arguments in this book come across as pretty obvious, it did require me to fully read and analyze Todd Henry’s book in order for me to truly understand the deeper meaning to why creative thinking is a crucial trait to posses in order to separate yourself from the rest of the

As you said in class, we have to measure it. When we are talking about the kind of creativity that can be taught, it is actually the kind of creativity that use reverse thinking for me. For example, we know what a normal alarm clock’s appearance and functionalities, then we think other than those properties as long as it is still an alarm clock. The normal alarm clock makes noise to wake you up, and then we use vibration instead. Being creativity, in this case, is making new ideas and designs in the way that different from others.…

Ideas are created in the mind, and so is creativity . This whole concept is like a painting. I remember growing up and thinking there would be flying cars and talking robots by the 2010’s. Although we’ve got robot mops and vacuums, it’s not exactly what I expected. In the book, The Rise of the Creative Class, the author Richard Florida intertwines that idea of expecting more technological advances to occur throughout the years. He starts of his book with the analogy of a time travelling man from the 1950’s who visits the 1900’s, and then our present era. We learn from this analogy that the time travelling man would be more adaptable to our current technology, compared to the early 1900’s.…

Prior to completing ENGL 2200, I had many misconceptions. I believed creativity to simply turn a new and innovative idea into reality and in order to be creative as well as imaginative you must act on the ideas you develop. I learned that creativity is so much more in addition to being the foundation for developing newer technology, literature, artwork, and so much more in life. I also believed imagination to be a personal thing and what stimulates thoughts for myself may not be the same thing that stimulates thoughts for others. I am the type of person who when faced with a problem that needs a solution, I generate ideas with fluency and flexibility.…

Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways to find hidden patterns” sums it up perfectly for me. Before discovering my own individuality, I think the word “creative” intimidated me. The word didn’t seem to apply to me in the slightest. To me, creativity implied concrete artistic genius. Because I was not a gifted painter, singer, actress, or musician, I thought I couldn’t be creative. Although my imagination is very original and always sprawling with new ideas, it took me a while to explore it.…

Many of the daily discussions and assignments required me to really take a step back and see things from many different perspectives, not just a one-track mind. This has also reopened my mind up to being more creative. Creativity is commonly defined as the use of imagination or original ideas to produce something new, unique, and potentially valuable. As Ken Robinson mentions in his TED speech, "creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status" (Robinson, 2006). Unfortunately, we treat creativity sometimes negatively.…

I am not a creative person. Some individuals are born to be poets, actor and artist because they seem to have creativity and imagination infused into them. However, I am an accounting major who accepted a long time ago that I have logic and organization infused into me. I am wired to approach everything in steps, similar to solving a math problem. This is why I think of writing as a step-by-step process.…

It seems like we’re always saying we want to get out of our comfort zones, take a bite out of life, challenge and change ourselves. But we rarely ever do. It’s one of those finicky things that sounds great in theory but, in practice, is actually very difficult. Think about it: Getting out of your comfort zone implies tearing your world apart for the sake of new experiences.…

The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff in 2008 (The American Council of the Blind v. Paulson). The case struck me when I first heard it, and I am still fascinated by it. It sparked an epiphany in terms of my own creativity; it’s dangerous to follow repetitive routine blindly. I discovered my passion for creative design after graduating from secondary school in Hong Kong, when I took a year off and worked as a visual merchandising trainee at a multi-brand fashion house.…
