First, we must understand how we create and how we can be creative. To do that we must know how we find inspiration. Inspiration is defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as, “something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone.” This definition itself explains so much about how we find our inspiration. Thinking that you have to get new ideas from within yourself is a common misconception. But as we observe different creations such as books, movies, art, songs, or photographs, we gather or “steal” our ideas. Most likely we gather our ideas from mediums we enjoy. As stated in Steal Like an Artist, “The best advice is not to write what you know, it’s to write what you like. Write the kind of story you like best-write the story you want to read.” You get inspiration from what you like. That’s how we get inspired and that is the entire goal of being creative. The only reason to be creative is to make something you enjoy.
