The process of describing a piece of art through an analytical context requires that you focus on one aspect of the piece at a time. These categories from which you can describe the piece of art are line, shape, color, texture, and composition. The piece figure of a woman from around 3500 BCE can be presented and taken apart piece by piece to show it to the reader.
First is the use of line within the piece. The figure is that of a woman who is relatively thin but has large curving hips that are spit down the middle by a dark line that emphasis her legs which gently curve toward the knees. Subtle lines bring out the V of where her legs meet her pelvis. The hair of the figure is described using curved lines which lead out from where the top of

The shape of the legs where they meet is so pronounced that it appears to have been added after the torso of the figure had been built. The breasts of the figure are very triangular which mimics the cone like shape of the arms. The head is covered by finger like hair that appears very stylized. The top of the head has a depressed cavity in the top like that of a candle stick.
The color of the piece is that of raw earth. Unpainted and worn terra-cotta give the piece a naturalistic look. Due to what appears to be weathering the shaper edges of the figure are a lighter shade of brown, specifically on the shoulders where the arms would be and the top of the figures head around the lip of the depression.
Although the piece is behind glass and you cannot touch the piece, you get a feel of the texture. The hair of the figure seems to have an almost wet like quality to it, as if the clay used has yet to

In Woman in a Purple Coat (1937), Matisse painted his assistant and companion, reclining in a Moroccan costume, set in an interior with exotic patterns and abstract ornamentation. He has avoided straight lines in this composition, however the colours clash in such a way that the image still works. He uses colour and light to rejoice in life. This was amongst the last of Matisse’s oil paintings. He soon began making paper cut-out collages instead of working in paint, due to ill health.…

Artwork offers a visual insight into the culture in the Americas during the time of colonization. The casta paintings provide the best evidence to represent the melting pot of human cultures in the Americas during the early days of settlement. The 15th panel in the 1763 Caste Painting Series by Miguel Cabrera; De Mestizo y d 'India is an oil on canvas painting which depicts a mixed race family; a Mestizo man, an Indian woman and their two children, whom the caste system labels as “Coyotes”. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Spanish word “mestizo” refers to a man of European and Native American origin. This is especially seen in the figure covered in roses. Additionally, another technique I used was my artist influence, Gerhard Richter and his method of dragging applied paint across a canvas to create a smooth-like texture. I applied this technique on the white background of each piece with a butter knife to make the background interesting. In particular, Gerhard’s Richter’s is the artist influence on my three pieces as I wanted to capture his technique of dragging applied paint across a canvas to create smooth-like…

The “skin” of the mannequin is completely smooth, there are no pores, wrinkles, caked makeup, or anything that signifies the imperfection the average woman possess. However, despite the unblemished surface of the mannequin, Rantoul creates some juxtaposition in his placement of the wig. When you examine the photograph, the wig resembles the rough appearance similar to that of someone who has just woken up from a hard night’s sleep. Using this imagery helps to relate back to the internal struggle that many people go through when it comes to their confidence in their appearance. People who are filled with body insecurities tend to stress over their look to the point where they lose sleep.…

Beginning with her headwear, remarkably prominent bands cover her forehead and advance to the top of her head. The band across her forehead is patterned with alternating plants, while the one directly above it doesn’t have an elaborate embroider, but is instead separated by two internal horizontal lines, giving it the appearance of three separate sections. Her hair is wrapped around this band giving it the realistic function of keeping her hair out of her face. Her hair is also tucked behind her ears and eventually extends to the upper part of her chest. The carefully carved curved lines within her hair help give it a flowing movement.…

Artists use metaphor as a way to express their artwork in a meaningful manner, through object. An artwork/object has the potential to be anything that the creator decides it to be viewed as. Two elements utilized in this piece of art are texture and color. Texture is the surface quality of a work (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 62). Color is the optical effect caused when reflected white light of the spectrum is divided into a separate wavelength (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 92).
