• A printed copy of the painting (from the Internet). Your printed copy must be labelled with artist, title, date, materials and sizes.
• An accurately drawn pencil copy (to fill about half of a workbook page). Do not trace the image! A well observed drawing with minor errors is far better than a simple tracing!
WRITTEN WORK (use art vocabulary):
• Context. Give background information (your own words) about Matisse (keep it quite brief). What is Woman in a Purple Coat about? What else do you know about the art work (from research)? Were Matisse’s methods part of any particular art movement (or style), and if so which (explain)? What other things might have influenced Matisse?
• An analysis of the art work in depth. You have previously been issued with Word Banks to help you in this activity. Use them!
CONTENT: what can you see (give a detailed description)?
FORM: explain how the artist used line, shape, colour, textures, tones, patterns or materials. What effects do these have? Describe the composition - how is the work arranged?
PROCESS: what is it made from and how is it made?
MOOD: what is the mood, feeling or emotion?
