In Decatur Boarding the Tripolitan Gunboat the men are shown in the painting is fighting for both freedom and money. This oil painting was painted by Dennis Malone Carter (1827-1881) in 1878. It appears that one side of the war being portrayed is much more justified and honorable than the other and they both have their own reasoning for their stories. No matter the side, in the end, war will have the same result when being fought over to this degree, death. This is a Marxism painting, that analyzing the relations between the social classes and the interactions and conflicts between the two. Personally never having put my life on the line such as the outstanding people in the United State’s military, there have been times where there was a friend who was in need and it was much easier to help them with their problem/ task because of knowing how a positive outcome would be produced. These American Navy men aren’t fighting for themselves but for all the men who have been or would have been taken away from their families and held captive, having a price placed on their lives. Not only is piracy wrong to begin with, these pirates aren’t like the popular pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean but more along the lines of the pirates from the movie Captain Phillips. They aren’t about treasure and rum but taking over boats and taking everything valuable from that boat that they can. A side note from the painting is that though Stephen Decatur is known as the hero, “Stephen Decatur as one of the bravest and most colorful sailors in the history of the U.S. Navy” (Cutler), there is apparently another unsung hero. Reuben James. James is a gunner who was involved in a dispute among a few Americans and Tripolitans who outnumbered the Navy men, whilst in battle saw an opportunity to be a hero by sacrifice. Decatur was grappling with the captain of the Tripolitan gunboat, and another Turk came about and made a move that would’ve killed Decatur, but James, “rushed forward and took the blow to his own head” (Cutler). Proving to the point made earlier about sacrifice for

Stand there, right in front of the painting; what do you see? Look closely, very closely and see the paint on the canvas flow through each brush stroke, see the colors expand and blur, and see how the lights play off the soft, vibrant colors. Watch the swirls expand out into an infinite space in time . The paint flies beyond the canvas and the shadows and reflections blur into one. The pinks, blues, reds, yellows, oranges, purples, and browns blend together to create a symphony of colors.…

Joseph Griffith’s “The Surrender” depicts George Washington riding a Triceratops, but that’s not what's really going on in this picture. Sure, there are many celebrities and famous imaginary characters, but the real theme is what is dividing the picture into sides. If you look closely, you can plainly tell that there is an American side, and a bad/ Islamic side. The painting is obviously split into a good guy/ bad guy theme.…

Thomas Jefferson was, for worse or for better, a man of the peace. Known for his somewhat radical idea that “If there be one principle more deeply rooted than any other in the mind of every American, it is, that we should have nothing to do with conquest.” In 1823, President Jefferson condemned “the atrocious violations of the rights of nations, by the interference of any-one in the internal affairs of another.” This was a new concept of thinking for the time. For example, when war with the British seemed inevitable near the end of Jefferson’s tour as secretary of state, he proposed what would today be termed “economic sanctions” as an alternative to military force.…

Historically, piracy and privateering are often confused and the differentiation between the two is vague. They are very similar since the general concept of their work (raiding and pillaging ships) is the same. It is authorization that forms the distinction between them: privateering was a governmentally authorized affair. The country giving the authorization considered it privateering and the country being raided considered it piracy. Distribution of Letters of Marque to privateering ships was common enough that pirates, the unauthorized sea raiders, could easily function under a facade of legitimacy.…

Realism and naturalism are two different literary movements, but they have many similarities. Realism expresses real life situations and focuses on a true illustration of life while naturalism is represented like an overstated type of realism. Naturalism is based on humans versus a force that is out of their control. Short stories in American literature portray realism and naturalism in many ways. Editha, The Open Boat, and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge are all based on these literary movements.…
