About the poem ADIEU by Jose Hernandez Diaz:
1. What was your first response to the work and what surprised you the most about the work? Explain in detail.
My first response to this work when I read it the first time was a disappointment since I expected something more savory and with better rhymes from a Chicano poet. What surprised me the most about this work is that this poet already has a BA in English Literature from UC Berkley and many publications for a short unattractive poem. Maybe he wrote this poem before all those accomplishments.
2. How would you describe the work to a friend? Explain in detail. Include a summary if that helps you describe the work.

The title of the work does not point to a major symbol, character or subject from which themes develop.

The details are important because they describe us things that occur during the night.

The symbolic object in the work that appears to have meaning beyond the literal level is: the city roars itself to sleep.

I do not know if I do not appreciate some more this poem because I am not a poet in spite of being the daughter of a good poet. My mother wrote wonderful poems in Spanish to each of her seven children, to her husband (my father), to her two brothers, to her grandparents’ family, to some of her grandchildren, to the Pope Juan Pablo II, to the Virgin Mary, etc.; approximately fifty poems. I wanted to write a poem in English to my only child (because he was born in Van Nuys, CA), but I did not have time for
