When walking around a college campus, almost everyone in the vicinity will be on their phones. No matter if people are walking, skateboarding, eating, and even talking to their friends, everyone will still be fidgeting with their personal electronic devices. The rise of technology and social media is obviously prevalent in today’s generation of mainly millennial teenagers and other young adults. We definitely praise the easy availability and advancements of mobile technology here in the Silicon Valley; however, it has created a real problem that many people may not even realize they have or admit even exists. Technology and social media addiction, whether via the constant use of social media sites, online chatting, texting, or playing video games, is a common yet terrible problem with many horrible physical, mental, and social effects.
Social media addiction is a real problem with many of its own physical side effects. When someone is addicted to technology, for example on a computer, they would generally be sitting down for long periods of time. This can lead to many incorrect ergonomic practices, leading to some physical symptoms such as back pain from not sitting correctly, carpal tunnel syndrome from constantly using a mouse or typing, or even blurry or strained vision from staring at a screen for too long.
