Life with ASD1When working in early intervention you tend to see tons of children, sometypical and others not. How do we distinguish these students? Each child isdifferent and the support required for them varies. There are a series of tests thatcan be administered for your child if you have concerns and anyone canrecommend you for testing or an evaluation. The earlier the better.At Kindering Center we administer a test called the MCHAT (ModifiedChecklist for Autism in Toddlers) as a screener tools for referrals forneurodevelopmental testing where they use the ADOS (Autism DiagnosticObservation Schedule).ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is defined as a “seriousneurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child 's ability to communicate andinteract with others. It also includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests andactivities. These issues cause significant impairment in social, occupational andother areas of functioning.” (Mayo clinic staff, 2014.) I will discuss somecharacteristics of children with ASD, teaching methods for children with ASD, andalso resources that will help support your child.Characteristics of children that are on the spectrum depend on the specificchild.
