The symbolism he created can start with the the colors and end with the actual items in the painting. The color scheme he chose to use consisted of black, white, and gray. The people that are present are a great example of the symbolism in colors, considering during this time people had to sneak around while gambling or drinking. The black color they appear to be show that what they were doing was a shady act. The “shady acts” the people were participating in are present all throughout the piece, starting with the bottle of Gin that is hidden behind what looks to be a wall. Gin is a symbol of drinking, which was highly illegal during the time due to prohibition, hints the reason why it 's hidden behind a wall which is symbolic as well. The trombone in the top center of the painting shows the uprising of jazz music, which was very prevalent during this time due to how new and popular it was. Both the money and the playing card represent the act of gambling which was also illegal at this time. The overall aura of the painting is that of a speakeasy; a place for people to gather to drink and gamble while listening to jazz
