    El Greco, also known by his birth name of Doménikos Theotokópoulos, was alive from 1541 to April 7th, 1614. The name “El Greco”, literally translated as The Greek, refers to El Greco’s Greek ethnicity and Spanish nationality. He was a painter, sculptor, and architect belonging to the Spanish Renaissance. He was born to a prosperous urban family in Crete, which was then part of the Republic of Venice; this was known as the center of Post Byzantine art, where El Greco received initial training to become a master as an icon painter of the Cretan school.
