In order to develop a sustainable space settlement, the first step is to maintain the survival of its inhabitants, humans. The survival of human beings and our societies is dependent on a lot of factors, but perhaps the most important need for it has to be food. Human beings need energy to survive and food provides us with nutrients that help our bodies be healthy and active. These nutrients are also what give us the energy we need to perform in our daily lives or fuel our bodies. Considering this, our team at BEARTH™, a proposition for a space settlement in the future, has conducted a lot of research and decided on solutions that would help maintain our food supply and sustain our space colony.

In order to figure this out, we needed to determine how many people we would take up to our space settlement. The number started as low as 50 people and went up to 2 million while brainstorming this factor. One member of our team argued that fabricating a small colony with fewer people would be a good idea because there would be fewer people to feed and the colony will require fewer resources and management. However, having a small colony could be bad because there will be less interaction between people and slow down the progress of the settlement. On the other-other hand, having a large society would be convenient because there would be a lot more activities leading to major progress. The downside of this is that more people require more food, a bigger settlement is going to cost more and demand a lot of maintenance. After careful consideration, our team decided on a colony consisting of 500 people because this number is not too big to feed and will allow people to participate in many activities. Now that this number was decided, some others needed to be decided as well. To determine the amount of food the whole colony needs, first, we need to figure out the needs of an individual. In the website, www.caloriecontrol.org, it is stated that an average human needs about 2,500 calories of food per day. This would translate to 17,500 calories per week and 910,000 calories per year. This means that the whole colony would require 1,250,000 calories of food per day. To meet these requirements, we would need to set up a stable food supply that will provide us with the food that will help us achieve our daily
