At the current time, the school district is working to provide healthier food choices for school-aged children with a program called the Farm to Cafeteria Program. This program develops gardens on school property or partners with local growers to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for students in public school. To increase community awareness and to help the Farm to Cafeteria Program be successful, the OCPHD will work closely with potential growers who can instruct teachers, students, and community members about growing a garden. Interested growers can receive a copy of the MN School Garden & Farm to Cafeteria Safety: A Food Safety Operations Manual. Teachers and children will learn to grow food, and interact with community members.…
To elude climate change, global greenhouse gas emissions must diminish quickly, and avoid wildlife extinction from grassland clearing. However, the probability of this occurring is unlikely to happen. Consequently, developing the NT food bowl will remain unsustainable, until all stakeholders are enforced with the concept of sustainability. Countless decision-makers plummet into the trap of thinking that even a major development will only have a tiny impact in a vast region due to the lack of knowledge.…
Food, a vital necessity for life, largely impacts the health of people. Fresh nutritious food supplies people with healthy vitamins unlike foods contaminated with harmful ingredients in order to maintain the taste of the food. In order to obtain a healthy lifestyle from fresher produce, people found that the locavore movement serves to be beneficial when several people buy food locally. However, when considering to follow the locavore movement, the environmental and financial benefits and impacts must go under consideration.…
The term Freshman 15 is slang that is used to refer to the weight gain in students who enter colleges and universities. Studies have proven that a student is likely to gain approximately 15 pounds in weight within the first year that they join the institution. Weight gain is a problem that widely affects a significant proportion of the society owing to the diseases that may result because of unusual weight gain. Gaining weight may lead to one increasing his or her body mass index leading to one being overweight or suffering cardiac diseases. This paper is a proposal to the solutions that colleges and college students may put in place to solve the problems that result from freshman 15.…
There used to be a time where owning just a high school diploma was feasible enough for a person to make an honest living. However, time has altered those standards. Owning a college degree is gradually becoming the new minimal credential for people to find success. Consequently, with colleges charging unreasonable amounts for tuition that rather only seems to be increasing, more and more college students find themselves in financial turmoil. As a result of absurd tuition cost, students are degraded to the point of choosing between an education or satisfying basic physiological needs.…
Oblivious Eaters Society has a distorted view of food: What it is made out of, where it comes from and how it is grown or produced. We as people should come together to educate each other on how processed food appears on grocery store shelves, how it affects our bodies, and how it affects the environment around us to help us make better decisions when it comes to interactions with food. In an article written by Wendell Berry called, “The Pleasures of Eating”, he describes eating as an agricultural act. (Berry 21)…
Administration and faculty, Indian Land has now come to be very prosperous for restaurants and food establishments, allowing a variety of food selections, consumers are presented a diverse selection of food to consume and enjoy. Indian Land High School does offer students different choices of food selections from day to day; however, these selections are prepared in unhealthy methods and are not as nutritious as a meal from a restaurant. Qualified restaurants prepare healthy food for consumers to eat. Off campus lunches offer students something to look forward to in their eventful week of school. Off campus lunches should be allowed to students at least once a week.…
We all know that school provided lunches aren’t very good, so why not leave school for lunch? Students are always complaining about how bland as well as small school lunches are, so the best option to fix these complaints is to have an open lunch. Food isn’t just a basic component of survival, it’s also one of the many things that makes life enjoyable; but school lunches are neither nutritious or pleasing to eat. Open lunch should be allowed in Augusta High School because there are many benefits to it like more food options, boosting the local economy, and practicing time management skills. Students all need very nutrient dense meals since they are all both growing and expanding their knowledge.…
College students pay numerous fees to attend and receive a degree from their university. Due to these incurred costs it is understandable that money can be tight for some students because of the multiple fees and charges they pay. One of the costs that has been controversial for college students is the cost of food offered on campus. Some students could argue that the cost of food is too high, and that the quality of the food does not match the costs of the food. Evidence from Nate Nkumbu’s article “Campus food costs around the state” shows that students are paying too much for food and are not receiving the quality that they are paying for eating on campus.…
Farmers markets are scarce around campuses in the fall season. Most students would have to drive off campus to find fresh produce. This can create issues with the students schedule and discourage them to buy locally if a fast food restaurant is more convenient for them. By creating a campus wide farmers market we can assure students will always have the opportunity to buy fresh produce at their convenience. UAB’s undergraduate student government association (USGA) held a small farmers market in September, but they have yet to hold another.…
Discussion The study addresses two questions: How do college students obtain the meals they are eating? Why are they consuming this food? According to my results, I found that food being accessible, cheap, and a healthy option factors heavily into the way a college student plans their diet. College students are aware that they should be eating healthy, however they have little time and money that cannot be wasted towards food, so they look for meals that help them save on both, all while still being a somewhat healthy choice.…
Instead of schools serving unhealthy lunches to students, we should feed the students with healthier foods that way they can stay away from certain health problems and have a better start towards their nutrition and academic performance. Preview: F. I would now like to talk about three details of unhealthy school lunches. Why there is so much unhealthy food in school lunches, why we should care about school lunches, and the solution to the problem. II. The Need step A. First Main Point…
As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I hope to continue to learn from individuals of diverse cultures to establish sustainable food systems. My short-term goal is to continue to support community gardens. My long-term goals are to influence policy regarding sustainable food systems and connect people to growing food in their community. With my interests, I plan to continue my education with a Master of Public Health or Master of Business Administration including an environmental or sustainability focus. This education is key to my long-term goal of starting a sustainable food consulting company that assists food services in incorporating locally sourced ingredients into their food…

Students will often choose the option that appears to be the easiest and most accessible. This usually means opting to order food from the campus cafeteria. This problem can be connected to a lack of education related to meal planning but is predominantly caused by the negative mindset we possess. Cheap and quick meals are attractive choices for students as many face financial challenges. A solution to this problem is preparing meals from home.…
