Sushi Yasudo's Restaurant Tipping System

In America, tipping has become a norm when it comes to dining at restaurants. It is crazy to think that there are other countries out there where tipping is not required, and even frowned upon! Sushi Yasudo is a restaurant located in Manhattan that adopted the Japanese custom of “tipping.” Instead of a voluntary tipping system, the restaurant integrated a service fee to all bills. It leads many restaurants to wonder whether to get rid of the tipping system as well.

PRO: Better Working Terms for Servers
The federal minimum wage declared by the U.S. Department of Labor is $7.25, but for servers, it is only $2.13. Therefore, customers are often encouraged, but not required, to leave a tip pf at least 15% when dining out. Restaurants have tried to implicitly enforce this policy by including a gratuity reference guide at the bottom of sale receipts. Nonetheless, since tipping is not mandatory, there are a handful of patrons that don’t tip enough or at all. As a server for three years, the tipping system has dishonored us in several ways. We are hostile towards our colleagues, fighting for tables. We experience negative attitude, which is then inflected on the customers. To compensate for the loss of tips, menu prices are likely to increase and even a service fee will be included. Of course, the customers will not be happy with these changes. Now, the server can stand there and list all the reasons for the overall increase of their bill, but it does not mean that the patron will listen. After all, people come for a good meal, not to hear a persuasive speech. By adopting a new system such as this, restaurants should be aware of the losses that comes with it. However, it is an obstacle that can be easily overcome if one feels that the long-term benefits will be worth
