Should Restuarants Be Allowed To Pay Paid Unemployees?

Improved Essays
Restuarants are allowed to pay their tipped employees far less than minimum wage, and as a result, server's income depends mostly, and in some cases entirely, on tips. Many people believe that employers should have to pay tipped employees minimum wage, and there are good arguments on both sides of the issue.

It seems strange that a person's paycheck would be dependent on the generosity of the people they serve. Technically tipping is not required, and unless they have worked in a restuarant themselves, people might not realize how important it is to a servers income. Despite this fact, the tradition of tipping is very established, and servers recieve a relatively consistent paycheck. In the first letter, they used a statistic showing that the performance of a server does not drastically affect the tip they recieve. To me, this shows that tips are consistent enough (regardless of the quality of service) to provide a server with stable pay, simaler to an hourly wage.

However, if nobody comes to the restuarant, nobody can leave a tip. On a very slow day where a server might only get if a few tables, they might end up making less than minimum wage for non tipped workers. Restuarants should be sure that all of their employees are making at least minimum wage. If a server is performing their job at the standards set by the restuarant, and still not

I work in a very popular resturant and on weekends the dinner rush can be soul crushing. What keeps me working hard and maintaining a high level of service is the fact that I am making a lot of money. Another way to say this is that the amount of money a tipped worker makes is directly related to how hard they have to work. Service is incredibly important to the success of a restuarant and the fact that servers depend on tips ensures that the quality of service will remain high even when it's

Entertainment workers Bambi Boots and Randy Rogers filed a complaint against their employer High Class Entertainment under the Fair Labor Standards Act, “It is a federal law applicable to employees engaged in interstate commerce or employed by an enterprise engaged in interstate commerce; sets minimum wages and overtime and regulates youth employment (Employment Law p. 480).” Fair Labor Standards Act has two requirements in order to file a complaint under this law. One is the employer and employee must have some kind of work relationship. Secondly, employer’s activities must meet an “in commerce” requirement. Bambi Boots and Randy Rogers have met those requirements because Bambi Boots started working with High Class Entertainment from May 26,…

Waffle Now is a restaurant that has, until now, chosen to pay their employees below minimum wage so that their servers can make up for what they do not revieve from the company in tips. The idea behind this is that the need for good tips from their costomers will create an incentive for employees doing well at their jobs. This is a plan that only works in theory, as there must always substanital tips from cusomers to fully make up for what the workers are not paid. Recently, the Waffle Now employees have found that the wages they recieve are simply not enough for them live on alone. Not only is this true, but they have also found that there is research on how this incentive-based tipping system is systematically broken, outside of Waffle Now and that other states have already begun to move away from tipping in its entirety.…

This makes it so that the first job of the waitress is not to serve the customer but the bartender. An example of this is when the text says, “But if in the midst of pressure a girl manages well, she will often hear the bartender say, ‘You’re a damn good waitress,’ or she may find one or another bartenders like to work with her… Even though each girl strives to please the bartender, she will be told, ‘You bitches have no brains. It’s a good thing you go to college because you wouldn 't make it in the real world’” (Spradley and Mann 1975:53).…

In order to cover the cost of these new payments, the restaurant will have no other choice. Take it from the store manager, who has had experience in the business. “If Waffle Now were required to pay servers the higher wage, I might need to raise the prices of our menu items to cover the wage increase. I fear that Waffle Now will lose many customers because of this. The restaurant may be forced to close.”…

Large firms or companies that earn large profits employ huge numbers of individuals, and these individuals are paid well at a standard rate. However, employees that work for fast food franchises or retail companies are the ones that have truly become more vocal about their wages. These companies, such as large firms, employ large numbers of employees, but their workers receive low wages with the purpose of keeping prices cheap for consumers and overall they have low profit margins. In addition to the specific details about the grievances that workers have, Surowiecki explains how demographic changes play into the demand for an increase in wages. During the changing economic times, minimum wage jobs increasingly became held by individuals who are trying to support their families versus serving as a job for teenagers or young adults.…

What people fail to understand is that if minimum wage was increased then business owners have to make a way to afford to pay their employees. Grant it, employees will make more money and possibly be able to afford the cost of living, but some studies have shown that it’s not really worth the hassle if prices of food, clothing, gas, and etc. were to arise. Not to mention, if minimum wage was increased to $15 an hour the price of many restaurants would rise by an estimated 4.3 percent. The only other way to compensate for the increase on the minimum wage for the employee is to change the food size rather than prices. Is it really worth it?…

Essay Analysis Tipping has become a daily routine of most people living in America. The essay, “The Case Against Tipping,” by Michael Lewis expresses the idea that tipping is becoming too common and too overused in simple businesses like coffeeshops. Lewis is frustrated with how tipping is now everywhere, and people feel very obligated to tip for thought of being embarrassed or experiencing an awkward situation.…

Women are the hardest hit by these low wages, in a press release from the white house Obama states Because women account for the majority of workers in tipped occupations - and because jobs that rely on tips tend to pay less than other occupations - most of the workers who would benefit from an increase in the tipped minimum wage are women. While women account for 55 percent of all workers who would benefit from a proposed minimum wage increase, they account for three-quarters of all workers in predominantly tipped occupations who would benefit. (Obamawhitehouse.gov) We are talking about single mothers, students or the undereducated who have a hard time making ends meet, this would benefit them the most. The FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act)…

In this course of my group project, I got my information from the web site, http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs15.htm and the source of this web site is United State Department of Labor. United State Department of Labor provided information that I needed in concerns of the application of the FLSA to tipped employees and how employees that customarily and regularly receive tips. I have got a lot of understanding under this web site about tip credit and pool credit during my research. I learned that employees are obligated in receiving tip credit like, waiters, waitresses, bellhops, counter personnel, busters, and service bartenders. Tip pooling has a valid arrangement that the employees ultimately receive tip from the employers and…

As someone who makes his living on mostly tips it might sound obvious that I don’t want the tipping system banned, but there are a lot of people out there that think it should be. People argue that tipping is unreliable and unpredictable and that an hourly fixed rate would be better for servers. The truth is that tipping is not as unpredictable as people think and is actually much better for servers than a fixed hourly rate As a delivery driver, I have noticed a pretty big difference between the quality of my service and how much people tip. If I get there early people normally give me a better tip, and if I’m really late, I’ll get a smaller tip or no tip at all. The same thing happens with waiters and waitresses in restaurants, better service…
