One way of communicating supportive verbal messages is to be genuine instead of being manipulative. According to Beebe & Mottet (2016), being genuine means that an individual seeks to be themselves as opposed to someone who they are not. Additionally, it means to take an honest interest in other people and considering their uniqueness and importance of their situations. A real-life example of me being genuine and not manipulative was when I asked my co-worker to switch shifts with me due to a family emergency in which I had to work at a later time than originally scheduled.
