Therapeutic communication is a learned process that health care professionals must practice when interacting with people who share similarities with future clients. I practiced therapeutic communication when I volunteered to be a “buddy” for a special needs guest at the “Night to Shine” Prom at Genesis Church in Tallahassee. Tim Tebow’s foundation sponsors proms held at churches and community centers across the nation. The event pairs people with special needs with volunteers who agree to be their “buddy” for the night; the prom’s committee paired Justin and I. As a buddy, I ensure Justin participated in all the activities and safely returned home after the event. I used therapeutic communication with Justin during the night in order to meet…

Communication plays a big role in the health and social care setting as it allows service providers to exchange information through speaking, writing or other forms of communication in order to understand the individual so that there is no misinterpretation. For example, if the communicator speaks one language but the receiver speaks another then there is a barrier as the communication fails. Language is an obvious barrier however there are other barriers that are not very obvious. For example, if a student has an idea…

If a student also notices an unusual change in another student’s behavior, there are online care reports that go directly to Dean Lisa’s office, in which she will follow up with the student afterwards. There are groups that tend directly to this student body, such as Limited Assessment, in which Dean Lisa will refer a student to the counseling center for a one-time visit to open a line of communication and evaluate the student.…
