The issue being discussed in the article is the new authority granted to the Food and Drug Administration in order for the agency to regulate and oversee how America’s food is grown on farms.
The parties involved are the FDA and farmers/advocates who are both pro and anti of the new regulation.
Advocates for food safety laws are emphasizing the needs to implement this new regulation in order to prevent foodborne outbreaks while others such as the organic industry have expressed concerns about the rules.

3. What is the significance of this topic to health policy? How does it affect the healthcare/public health system?
This topic is significant to health policy because as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “Every year, about 48 million of us, roughly one in six people in the United States, get sick from eating contaminated food” (CDC, 2013). Therefore, increased authority to ensure the safety of foods could save millions of people from getting sick every year due to the food they have ingested. Furthermore, billions of dollars could be saved by eliminating foodborne illnesses since “foodborne illness poses a $77.7 billion economic burden in the United States annually” (Bottemiller, 2012).

4.What are the options being discussed to deal with the problem? Which of these options would you advocate for? Why?
Some of the options that were discussed in order to prevent foodborne outbreaks include imposing new regulations that require the FDA to oversee the mechanism in which America’s food are grown. The new rules include the FDA’s ability to make sure that workers are trained to wash their hands and monitoring irrigation water from harmful bacteria.
Although it will be challenging to implement this new regulation, I think the overseeing of how our foods are grown could potentially prevent the incidence of foodborne outbreaks and reduce the economic burden from foodborne illness- related outcomes.
