Salmonella In our country, our government is very strict on the process of food being checked and being clean. At 1906 the Pure Food and Drug Act would be passed by president Franklin D. Roosevelt. This purpose was to make sure the the public would be safe from the many types of food they consume. Meat Inspection Act in 1906 followed by the Pure Food and Drug Act would also be passed for the same reason as the Pure Food and Drug Act. But recently, major foodborne outbreaks would happen such as salmonella, E. coli, and listeria. These outbreaks have tripled in the United States in the past twenty years (Newsela). Salmonella would be found in the food of Chipotle, and from that reason many chains of Chipotle would be closed (Newsela). During the months August through September many patients were sick due to Salmonella, they accounted for the most illness and hospitalization. Salmonella outbreak linked to raw chicken have antibiotic - restraint strains had led to many ill people to be hospitalized. Those people who would get sick from the Salmonella would get Salmonella Septicemia which this is a life threatening thing (USAToday). In a large outbreak of Salmonella they would be found in such as eggs, chicken and raw tuna (Newsela). The CDC had said that contaminated foods get at least 48 million Americans sick annually which led to 128,000 to the hospital and 3,000 people would die from being sick (Newsela). Due to the worrying of food contamination the CDC would create the gene sequence tool that can track down the source of the outbreak much more faster (Newsela). Salmonella symptoms are diarrhea, cramps and fever, but some people may get nausea, chills, and vomiting. As Salmonella create their own antibiotics and as humans consume contaminated food these bacteria would be much more harder to treat. To defend against contaminated food it is best if the food is cooked in 165 degrees to kill the bacteria (USAToday). During the 1800’s there would be an incident about Salmonella which was known as Typhoid Mary back in the day. Mary was an immigrant who had moved to the United States and started her job as a cook. As she would make the food she would infect 22 people with the food she had served. As investigators would trace the trail of where the contamination had happened it would lead back to where Mary had worked, but she was long gone. Mary would work from household to household until 1907, where she would get caught and she would be sent to forced isolation for 23 years
