Essay on Author’s Craft: “Marigolds” In “Marigolds,” Eugenia W. Collier uses symbolism to develop the theme that “One cannot have both innocence and compassion(Collier pg 22).” Innocence clouds people of hate, sorrow and pain. “I scrambled to my feet and just stood there and stared at her, and that was the moment when childhood faded and womanhood began. That violent crazy act was the last act of childhood.” This means that in the beginning of the story Lizabeth is innocent but she slowly is becoming more aware of the real world which means that she cannot be innocent anymore.…
“Difficult times show someone's true character.” An anonymous author stated this quote to provide an image of Americans’ lifestyle during The Great Depression. In the short story, “Marigolds”, Eugenia Collier uses imagery to convey the difficulty of life and uncertainty of many Americans experienced by showing Americans’ will to survive, the fragility of the stock market, and their wavering hope even during the darkness. In the beginning of the story, “Marigolds,” Eugenia Collier portrays the image of her’s and thousands of other Americans’ difficult childhood.…
In The Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Maria both display Steadfastness, Kindness, and Faith. When Homer had already decided to build the chapel, people in the village tried to discourage him, telling him that building the chapel would be of no merit for him. Even after being tested, Homer remained steadfast in his decision of building the chapel for Mother Maria. Mother Maria was tested for steadfastness more than Homer, for when everyone had been discouraging the nuns by never socializing with them or helping them, Mother Maria, as well as the other nuns, kept on praying, remaining steadfast in their belief that Someone would help them. In the arrival of Homer, while Mother Maria was being unwelcoming, Homer was kind…
It’s almost the middle of May, and it seems like just yesterday that I walked into your class on the first day of school. At that point, I had band first period. I’ve been through three different first period classes this year -- band, study hall, and finally, Spanish. I’d heard a lot about you and your Honors English class before the first day of school. In fact, I checked with all of my older friends at Amity to find out about my classes and my teachers.…
The term hillbilly refers to an unsophisticated country person, associated originally with the remote regions of the Appalachians. However, J.D. Vance uses the word to describe a community of people who are a product of their environment. Throughout the book he lets us into his life, telling many different stories about his life as an adolescent. Facing drug abuse, domestic violence, and an unstable family structure he speaks of his struggles to overcome the tough times and trails he faced growing up in a place where nothing ever changed. He proves to the readers that even though society may view him as destined to fail where you come from doesn’t always define where your headed.…
Monocultures are when only a single type of crop is being cultivated in a single area. Monocultures have become the norm in the United States and many other parts of the world. At the start of this semester I did not think having a lot of one single crop was a bad idea. Having a few types of delicious apples and the same bananas at the store every day made me feel comfortable. I knew exactly what I was getting every time I went to the store.…
I loved this book it was great I read it and it just left me with goose bumps, especially the ending where Kurtz final words were “The Horror, The Horror”. I didn’t think much of the book just another great book with a crazy twist at the end and the characters, I just felt remorse for them and didn’t give it much of a second thought, but going to my In class lectures my professor complete opened up my mind, he showed me the book through a whole different perspective and it was absolutely…
In The Secret Garden, readers learn the devastating effects on a child when he or she is shown no love. Mary Lennox, the protagonist of the story, was given all the goods and things that she wants, but with no real feeling from her parents, she feels neglected and soon adapts a very nasty character. When you first read it, it may seem like she might never change, but when she encounters a secret garden tucked away in a hidden room in a giant mansion, she changes completely. Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote books mostly for children.…
The book does a great job of propelling into the main plot right away while still developing each character. By the time each character dies, you don’t identify them as just a fictional character, but as a person that you have a bond with. Because of this, when somebody dies (which is quite often) it feels as if a close friend of yours has passed in real life. This makes the book hard to read while making it intense at the same time. I like the book very much because it doesn’t hold back the truth.…
I chose Wicked Plants by Amy Stewart over the others on the list of approved books because it sounded more interesting and more relevant than some that just focused on one branch of Botany, instead of the entire wicked spectrum like Stewart does. I like how she breaks up the world of devious plants into seven distinct categories. The plants are reported on alphabetically with relation to their crime, but with a heading that falls under one of the seven wicked categories; deadly, destructive, dangerous, illegal, intoxicating, offensive, and painful. She then gives the name of the plant or family group and a famous story of introduction to each on how someone was affected by them. The symptoms are listed, as well as their possible cures or…
My favorite part of the book is the final heist and how all of the pieces of the puzzle go together. It’s cool how everything that they planned turned out to happen. An important part is when March is explaining their plan, foreshadowing what might happen. He says, “‘Fact: Blue is scared of the Top Cats … I saw her face on that roof. Fact: Zef has been working on Dmitri not to trust her.…
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, there are many situations where the characters are affiliated with flowers. Each of the flowers; Camellias, Azaleas, Geraniums, and Calpurnia’s; give a deeper understanding of each of the characters. Through these symbols Harper Lee provides the reader a deeper understanding of Miss Maudie, Mrs. Dubose, Mayella Ewell, and Calpurnia. Like the Camellia’s, Mrs. Dubose is deep rooted. Camellia’s symbolize how ugly things, like racism, can hide under pretty shells.…
My opinion of the book is that it was awesome. It had a lot of action that keep me reading. I always wanted to know what was going to happen…
In the literature we have read this week each story underlines and capitalizes on the signs of injustice and inequality. The four focal points shown in these stories are country needs more important than the people’s needs, racial inequality, economic class level and loss of innocence in humanity. The first point where injustice is highlighted is in the story “Punishment” by Seamus Heaney. The toll of the story is about the two selfish nationalist fighting for their own reason and the people from each country doing nothing for their needs besides watching this Irish innocent woman getting caught between these two and is brutally murdered because she was not conspiring with her culture.…
Bruce Watson, author of the book Bread and Roses explains to the reader an overview of a strike caused in Lawrence, Massachusetts by textile workers in 1912. Immigrant workers who came from all sorts of lands such as Italy, Ireland and Germany and many more started working in Mill working areas. They came to America for the American Dream. Sadly, these immigrants were working in horrible working conditions. These conditions led workers to die or grow sick.…
