Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a book I read for my University English class. People always say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but I am that one guy that does. When I first looked at the book to be completely honest, I thought it had something to do with witches or something really unrealistic. I know I have a wild imagination. The first couple of pages of the book got me hooked instantly, I loved how the book just starts and how the narrator gets right into his adventure as a young man into the Congo River. I loved this book it was great I read it and it just left me with goose bumps, especially the ending where Kurtz final words were “The Horror, The Horror”. To me Kurtz was just the chief of the Inner Station and the object of Marlow’s quest. Didn’t give it much thought just a poor man who went mad in the Congo’s. But in the lectures we learned that it was much more than just that. Kurtz was doing more then just trying to make his way up the ranks Kurtz had been trying to bring light in the heart of the darkness he was trying to bring enlightenment into the Congo. Kurtz is an idealist; he proves his worth by helping humanity. Kurtz was acting with the agency; he was trying to make a difference. Kurtz company is at risk, there company is based upon ivory. Kurtz understands that the binary is wrong, but his whole life is based on it, he spent so many years trying to move on up in rank and now he is to realize that it’s all wrong, that the company he is working for is inhuman.
