Summary Of MC Escher's 'Bond Of Union'

Improved Essays
The portrait, ‘Bond of Union’, by MC Escher, was created in 1956, and depicts Escher’s wife and himself. Their heads are joined together in the portrait, so as to represent that they were molded from the same clay. Two are staring at each other, while their heads seem to be peeling. The portrait is composed of the faces and ordered, molecular spheres along a black background.
The two figures seem to be peeling as an apple or orange does. The connected heads represent the union between them, while the peeling represents their impermanence on a larger scale. Upon first glance the two seem to be staring neutrally into each other’s eyes. However, the two were also lover’s. It may be instead that the two have grown accustomed to gazing at each other.

The next contemporary artist is Kiki Smith. Smith is popular for creating nude prints and sculptures of men and women, but specifically representing women as figures for reproduction, menstruation, and motherhood. Her sculptures revolve around feminine work and explore the physical aspects of the women’s body. In her sculpture Train, made from wax, a woman stands in a small room with red beads flowing out of her vagina. The red beads stand out in the sculpture, because they create a trail behind the woman to symbolize blood and menstruation.…

Brain Caswell explores the themes appearance and reality, showing how appearances can be deceptive and how humans are complex in his novel, Double Exposure. He does this by using the metaphor of double exposure, and characterisation. Caswell also effectively used intertextuality to ensure that the reader has a greater understanding of the main themes, and to convey different ideas that are explored during the novel. Double Exposure deals with ideas of how appearance and reality can be deceptive and the complexity of humans, which is explored through the metaphor of double exposure itself. In art, double exposure is a technique where two or more exposures are changed to create a single image, and has a corresponding meaning in respect of the two images.…

Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help.…

It is a photograph, with three-dimensional and naturalistic qualities. It has a narrative and is it asymmetrical. The main feeling I get when I look at this photograph is love. See how loving the couple is standing holding close to each other, enjoying their time together. In addition, a calming feeling is portrayed, they are relaxing, and their positioning of their bodies shows contentment.…

Art is like a window to the mind, representing how one thinks or what one feels. In some cases, it may contain elements from one’s unconscious; elements that even they are not aware of themselves. Art has zero qualifications, allowing it to be crafted by anyone and everyone, while still containing components of its creator and provoking feelings in its spectators. (Rustin, 2008) Of the pieces involved in the Best of the Season exhibit at the Webber Gallery, Lunch With Einstein by David D’Alessandris is one of the more “unusual” pieces. It contains four figures, whose heads seem to be taken from elsewhere and pasted onto their bodies.…

During my visit to the Memorial Art Gallery, they were and still are showing M. C. Escher: Reality and Illusion along with other exhibitions. Many of his artworks seemed to correspond to the topics discussed in class. There were several artworks that stopped my eyes. Out of those artworks, Stars created in 1948 is a wood engraving portraying two chameleons in a hollow octahedron 3-compound with other similar, smaller figures colored in yellow, blue, and pink in the solid black background. Escher described as, “Single, double and triple regular bodies float like stars through space.…

On Friday, November 20th, I was lucky enough to make a visit to the Columbus Museum of Art. With only five minutes to spare after repeatedly getting lost and begging the security guard to let me in I was able to experience my first time attending an art exhibit. With only a short period of time to let everything sink in I came across a few portraits that caught my eye.…

At the same time, the couple appears to be entangled in the warmth of the gold blanket or cover in which they lie in. The background suggests a night sky, or maybe a cloudy time during the day, but it’s definitely dark outside. The two bodies appear to almost teeter at the edge of a flowery meadow atop what looks to be a cliff or some may say that it may appear that they are laying down in the flowery meadow. Depending on how you interpreted it, it will either give the notion that they are in danger of cascading into the darkness down below the cliff or that they could just lay there for hours and hours. Klimt's biographer Frank Whitford actually has pointed out that earlier studies for the picture show the man with a beard, suggesting that he might be meant to represent the artist himself, (which is not uncommon practice, just look at the Mona Lisa?) while the woman represents…

I chose to base my creative piece on the Australian short story – American Dreams by Peter Carey. The purpose of my piece was to highlight central themes such as Americanisation – an idea that claims that 'America has colonised our subconscious' and the delusion of the American Dream. These thematic aspects are prevalent in 'American Dreams' by Peter Carey, in which a remote and isolated town becomes influenced by the concept of living the American Dream and as a result of trying to conform to the American ways, they lost their identity. My story too is set in a small town of similar sort in which everyone has been groomed from childhood to chase the American Dream. But, it takes place on a bus to show how fast pace the American Dream is and…

Parental expectations often differ greatly from the child’s expectations and perspective of life, and future plans. A vivid picture of this idea is presented by Richard Maury in the image “Lorenzo Plus”. The focal point of the image is the mirror, in which one can see the apparently disappointed and exasperated father who plays half the role in defining the visual representation of this father-son relationship. It can be assumed that the younger man in the image is the boy, perhaps named Lorenzo, and he is a struggling writer. There is crumpled paper all over the floor, and filling the waste basket.…

In every romance or drama movie, the boy meets a girl, boy saves the girl (or vice versa), and then they fall in love. We see this scenario repeated in all sorts of media, but also in our own lives. Why do we fall in love? The answer is not always clear, but one thing for certain is that love is important for us as humans. “The lover” figure exists for us because love is something that all of us are ‘supposed’ to find.…

One is Love on the right, an angel with wings crushed, attempting to hold back the specter of Death from entering the home that he is guarding. Around the two figures are roses that encroach up the walls, and even fall under the feet of Death. This creates an image in which Death would be seen as an antagonist to love, if not for the way that Death looks at the angel of Love. This is all just my interpretation, but I will give you my impression of Death given his actions in work. The specter of Death has his hand in the doorway just above Love’s head, neglecting to touch him or force his way into the home.…
