Many artists change their style as they’re maturing. When artist are generating their first works of art much of their inspiration come from other experienced artists. With the passage of time, artists become more experienced and developed their own style. Fernando Botero’s signature style is known as ‘Boterismo’. Botero is a Colombian artist widely known for his robust depictions of people, animal, objects and other elements of the natural world. Two paintings that will be compared and contrasted to show how this artist’s paintings have changed over the years are “Picnic en las Montañas” and “Picnic”.

The painting portrays a couples dressed in formal attire for a picnic on the mountains just as the title describes it. The woman is sitting down while looking into space. She’s holding a fruit on her right hand, and reaching into an orange with the other. The man is lying beside her with his head resting on his hand and the other in front of his chest as he looks directly into the viewer’s eyes. In the background we can see diagonal lines in the mountains, which make them seem in a triangle form. The composition also shows repetition and rhythm in the different size variations of mountains creating an allusion of movement throughout the canvas. Because of the different sizes mountains it appears that the couple are giants. At the far right of the painting a couple of trees are visible with vertical lines.
