On October 24, 2016, three students from Virginia Wesleyan College involved themselves in an interview survey that focused on their study preferences and habits. There were five questions asked regarding, where they prefer to study, how do they prefer to study, how often they prefer to study, how frequently they take breaks while studying, and how focused are they while they are studying. Once the candidates responded to the five questions, there was a request for feedback regarding some positive and/or negative thoughts about the interview. Considering the feedback from candidate one, the researcher should inform their subject about the type of interview they are participating in and details behind this type interview method. A structured interview is meant to be prepared ahead of time that may come with a limit of questions different from an unstructured interview. Therefore, it is important to inform subjects about what they are getting into instead of them feeling left empty at the end. Since they were not informed about the number of questions being asked and did not know how short the interview would have lasted. Taking away from the second candidate’s response, the interviewer should first identify the term their measuring when conducting research. It is important to define the term because even though researchers believe what they are asking people to relate to is universal and/or self-explanatory the public may not have the same understanding. People in society have different terminologies that determine how they categorize and/or understand information. In addition, considering the feedback from candidate three and similar to candidate two it is necessary for interviews to develop comprehensible answer choices for their subjects to offer an accurate response without confusion or disengagement. However, it can be problematic because new questions cannot be asked to keep responders engaged and questions may lack detail that may require a further explanation from the interviewer. In the future, it is important for those who want to pursue structured interviews to inform their subjects about the content of the interview. All of the candidates who participated in the interview regarding their study preference and habits interview felt dissatisfied because they felt the interview was short and straightforward. They did not feel the interaction between themselves and interviewer and ultimately felt left short. Secondly, it is important for interviewers to define the subject matter of the interview. The interviewer may assume that everyone who participates in the interview has a general understanding of the topic at hand. However, not everyone is the same and comprehends the same information at the same level. Even if the majority of the people who they interview have the same understanding of the topic at hand, it is still important to inform their audience in the beginning of the interview. Finally, it is important for interviewers to develop understandable answer choices for subjects to feel confident in their answer choice without confusion or disengagement.
