As I walked into the house, I was greeted with kisses on the cheek and a variety of foods. Mostly of the foods were foreign to me, so I decided to have a salad. I was getting awfully weird looks since I only picked the salad, but I did eventually try a couple dishes. All around me I heard everyone other than me talk in Portuguese which made me feel like an outsider. My friend did tell me snippets of the conversation when he thought it was necessary, but for the most part I did not know half of the conversation at the dinner table.
I felt like an outsider the majority of the time since I did not speak their native language. I did connect with some of his cousins who spoke both Portuguese and English.
With his male cousins, I mainly ly talked about soccer which at the party, nearly all of the younger people either like or currently play soccer. Since I was sticking out like a sore thumb at the party, many of the female cousins tried to talk to me about my social life and school.
