Outside the Box The group that I chose for my experience is Latinos, specifically Brazilian. I chose this group since I have always wanted to look at the group with a critical lens. Some physical stereotypes of Latinos are that they have dark skin. The men are groomed, especially their facial hair. Another stereotype is that Latino men have a large number of tattoos. Women on the other hand are represented as extremely curvy, specifically with a coke bottle shape. Some beliefs stereotypes have created are that Latinos are lazy and dangerous. Another stereotype is that all Latinos speak Spanish and talk fast when they are upset (Stereotype Matrix, Susan Owusu, October 5th, 2015). As I walked into the house, I was greeted with kisses on the cheek and a variety of foods. Mostly of the foods were foreign to me, so I decided to have a salad. I was getting awfully weird looks since I only picked the salad, but I did eventually try a couple dishes. All around me I heard everyone other than me talk in Portuguese which made me feel like an outsider. My friend did tell me snippets of the conversation when he thought it was necessary, but for the most part I did not know half of the conversation at the dinner table.
I felt like an outsider the majority of the time since I did not speak their native language. I did connect with some of his cousins who spoke both Portuguese and English.
With his male cousins, I mainly ly talked about soccer which at the party, nearly all of the younger people either like or currently play soccer. Since I was sticking out like a sore thumb at the party, many of the female cousins tried to talk to me about my social life and school. It made me feel so much more comfortable with my situation as I felt like I was wanted in a
