African Americans have always been stereotyped throughout their lives. It has been known that stereotyping against blacks started way back in late 1800 during minstrel era. Minstrel era was the era where Americans developed a form of entertainment for themselves. It mostly consisted of comic acts, variety acts, dancing and music that were only performed by white people. In this show, the whites want to play as a black person, they paint their faces black to portray being black. The stereotypes used during this era were Jim Crow, Zip Coon, Mammy, Uncle Tom, Buck, Wench/Jezebel, Mulatto, Pickaninny. Jim Crow was a character created by a white man called Thomas Rice. He always painted his face black whenever he was about to go into his play. It was said that Jim Crow was a man that had a “crooked leg and deformed shoulders.” It was also said that he loved to dance and always wore ragged and thrown clothes. Thomas rice as well portrayed Jim Crow like that in all his show. He was later called “Daddy” Rice because he became so popular because of his character. Zip Coon was performed by George Dixon in 1834. This character was a representation of all free black during this era. It described free blacks as pompous, flamboyant and always wanted to attract attention. Another stereotype used back in the days were Mammy. Hispanics have been viewed as lazy, unintelligent, criminal, drug addicts and even rapist. The stereotypes surrounding them are; The domestic, which is described as a Hispanic maid that works for rich Caucasians. The stereotypes speak English with a mix of Spanish words and phrases. this stereotype we mostly see as of the present as well. We mostly see the stereotype in movies where the rich Caucasian hires Hispanics as a cleaning maid.
