A tax practitioner's main responsibilities are providing clients or taxpayers proper and professional advice, as well as preparing and filing accurate tax returns. Their duties include informing the clients of any taxation requirement and possible conflicts of interest, as well as analyzing the clients’ taxation situation. Moreover, when performing in tax practice, tax professionals should interview their clients to understand their personal situation and determine the proper form to be prepared. Also, they would gather required financial information delivered honestly and free of misrepresentation, such as the clients’ annual income, expenditures, exemptions and deductions. The general idea of this Code of Professional Conduct is that when “in the performance of any professional service, a member shall maintain objectivity and integrity, shall be free of conflicts of interest, and shall not knowingly misrepresent facts or subordinate his or her judgment to others.” (2014, AICPA Code of Professional Conduct) Members of the society are required to follow the seven major principles mentioned in the Code of Professional Conduct, which are responsibility, public interest, integrity, objectivity and independence, due care, and scope and nature of services. That is to say, tax practitioners need to be sensitive to morality in their activities during work. They should understand the spirit of the standards and apply these requirements in their own professional judgements to continually enhance the quality of tax services.
If Amante failed to uphold the standards, she will be subject to investigation by the Society’s Ethic Committee for reasonable discipline under the Joint Ethics Enforcement Program (JEEP) agreed by both the AICPA and IL CPA Society.
