American Dental Education Association Professionalism Values
Professionalism and ethics go hand-in-hand. Individuals must encompass, or learn to acquire the attributes which allow for ethical reasoning during moral dilemmas. Our moral judgements are brought into question often, considering we treat people of varying cultures, who live various life styles. Learning ethical principles, and becoming culturally competent allows providers to be better prepared when ethical dilemmas are presented. To facilitate ethical competence various associations, have ethical codes in place to guide professionals in their education and practice. The American Dental Education Association’s statement on professionalism delineates desirable attributes enabling professionalism during the course of our careers (American Dental Education Association [ADEA], 2009). I must say, two of the six specified values which are most appealing, are first integrity, followed by service-mindedness. Provided that integrity, and service-mindedness are adhered to the remaining values of respect, competence, fairness, and responsibility follow naturally, in my opinion.
First, integrity is “being honest and demonstrating congruence between one 's values, words and actions” (ADEA, 2016, p.2). Maintaining integrity pushes me to achieve professionalism as a Dental Hygienist. The characteristic can be achieved and maintained by furthering ones’ education, and attending continuing education courses in pursuit of professional excellence. Clients appreciate providers who are competent, and who are truthful because they care. Explaining rationales for various assessments and processes of care to the client is important. Service-mindedness is defined as “acting for the benefit of the patients and the public we serve, and approaching those served with compassion” (ADEA, 2016, p.2). As a general rule of thumb non-maleficence and acting in beneficence towards the health of all societal members is only fair. Originally, I entered the dental field because I loved the smile make-over, and confidence individuals gained after their oral health had been rejuvenated. So, keeping my original reasons of choosing the profession in mind, allows me to remain empathetic towards people’s needs, and desires. It also allows me to remain true to my own values. Remaining in tune with those original values allows me to care for the public, and help in oral health efforts whenever I can. It is only the respect society deserves as a whole. Oral health not only affects systemic health, but it also affects mental health in general, and as healthcare professionals it is our responsibility to assist clients/patients to achieve their goals. Justly collaborating, participating in service-learning, and volunteering helps our public’s healthcare needs. The various avenues can help provide services to those who otherwise would not be able to access the care they deserve. And the collaborating with other providers allow us to learn from one another during the course of our
