Once the speaker has decided upon a suitable topic that he or she would like to present to the class, it is necessary to start to think about how he or she would go about delivering the speech. The way a speaker delivers his or her speech is just as important as the content of the speech itself, as it “plays an important role in influencing how audiences react to a speaker and his or her message” (p. 192, yellow edition). Whether or not a persuasive speech will get its message across all depends on the way that the message is expressed.

According to researchers, “we typically remember only 20 percent of what we hear, but if we both hear and see something, we remember more than 50 percent” (p. 203, Osborn). Thus, it would seem sensible to try to incorporate some sort of visual aid into a presentation. However, it is important to properly use an aid so that it does not take away from the topic at hand. There have been numerous occasions in the past where some of my classmates chose to add colourful and flashy animations to their presentations, probably with the intent to capture their audience’s interest. In reality, their graphics actually detracted from their presentation as they distracted the rest of the class from the main message that the speakers were trying to bring across. In the context of our speech communications class, assuming that we are allowed a slideshow to be displayed during our speeches, clear and legible graphics could be included to help the audience better understand the information being presented. Examples of visual aid that could be used to enhance a presentation include simple charts and graphs that could help to elaborate on facts and figures, as well as other appropriate pictures relevant to the topic at hand. In summary, when designing a speech, it is important to keep the audience in mind and design the presentation such that the topic is relevant and new to the audience. The speaker should also plan out the way that the speech is delivered, making sure to include proper body language and the use of visual aids to engage and connect with the audience.
