Summary Of Public Speaking Chapter 6

By reading chapter 6, the main point to stuck out to me were the three main questions to keep in mind referring to the audience. The first is, "who am I speaking to?" Knowing who your audience is important when working on a speech because you can come up with techniques on how to connect the topic to the audience personally, and know what many be offensive or appropriate. The second question is, "what do I want them to know, believe, or do as a result of my speech?" Having a single main point to a informative speech is very important because you don't want your audience to get lost in the speech topic. I learned it's important to be clear when speaking to the audience so they can understand the point, and hopefully believe and learn something

Schultze says “As servant speakers, we first should listen and dialogue with others to clarify what they ultimately believe. We then need to begin determining why, when, and how to use God-talk, which is believers’ foundation for big-picture truth. As we speak with others and listen to their responses, some of our views might change. We might especially refine our control beliefs, thereby making us wiser speakers in the future.” This helped me in learning that we really need a good background on your audience.…

Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

I did my FOA on the influence of Donald Trump’s words in a speech he delivered in West Palm Beach, Florida. In my presentation, I analyzed his language and its impact on his audience through the form of a presidential speech. I gave a speech to convey the feelings that might have been felt by his audience on that day, to my fellow peers. In my FOA, I used the speech terms taught in the first semester to help discuss what the person who wrote Donald Trump’s speech might have wanted the audience to feel. I used words such as alliteration and connotation to unpack Trump’s words as well as using the experience gained from our unit on presidential speeches.…

When creating my informative speech, I had to determine when I was presenting this information too which in the case is will be my professor. Then I decide what presentation to use, which in this case this is an informative speech. Before I started, I needed to create a delivery outline for my speech. When creating this outline, I had to think on how to communicate the ideas by trying to convince the audience on how to create and present an informative speech does not take as much time as they think it does. I also had to think about the duration on how much time I have to present my outline speech to the audience, which in this case would be 3-5 minutes long.…

One of thing things A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking talks about that I want to draw from going forward is forming a specific speech purpose. “Ask yourself: What do you want the audience to learn/do/reconsider/agree with?” (Page 50). This is an idea that I want to keep in mind a lot more before I start writing my speeches. By being able to pinpoint my intentions I believe I will be more effective in making audience laugh or making them consider a certain idea, etc.…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
