Social Media Users and their Digital Trails
The year is 2015; because of many technology advances, such as the internet, thieves and hackers are not limited to pick pocketing, burglary, or dumpster diving to commit crimes, such as identity theft. The United States Department of Justice defines identity theft as a “crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain”. According to the Consumer Sentinel Network (CSN) report, provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), identity theft was the number one complaint for the calendar year 2013. This report identified 290,056 (14%) complaints that year concerning identity theft. The ways in which identity theft occur are extensive, but this paper will solely focus on identity theft triggered by social network participation. Social networks sites vary, but are typically a virtual setting for socializing and encourage users to provide personal information. Identity theft rates continue to stagger at an alarming rate. To help address those needs, consumers need enhanced protection. Increased efforts to educate individuals on their social behaviors can diminish the rate of infringements that occur.
Because social networks are different, they may recommend users to share different information. Most social networks however, generally require a name or username, email, location, birthday, and photo when creating a basic profile. An…
