In the twenty first century many individuals are using social media applications daily on a variety of personal devices such as phones, tablets and laptops; however it may be appropriate to modify the use of social media and be aware of the consequences of using it while working in the medical or nursing profession for various reasons. Social media is used to communicate with other users via messages, images and posting statuses that can be viewed by anyone depending on their privacy settings. This communication method has specific regulations and guidelines that must be adhered to in order to ensure that patient information is preserved fairly through confidentiality (Australian Health Practitioner Agency, 2014). Social media has positive and negative effects that may be interpreted differently, as a health professional it is important to ensure that information about colleagues, patients and procedures are not shared to the public who may have undesirable views on the matter. Concurrently, social media can also be used to promote healthcare and strengthen the relationship between staff and the community by answering relevant questions politely and helpfully (University of South Australia, 2014). Social media is a powerful tool that must be controlled wisely to protect sensitive information.
