Crowds were cheering, oil was splattering, and dreams were coming true when “Black Gold” was finally found. Money was soon to come in the pockets of the wildcatters and their families. The first amount of oil that was found in Texas was in Spindletop. They found the oil in the year 1901 in January. Many people wanted to find oil, so they packed up their stuff and moved to boom towns. Wildcatters and roustabouts found the oil and made millions of dollars that next day, but oil soon became common and the prices went down. When oil was found, it created a lot of jobs for the African Americans and the Mexican Americans. The jobs were dirty and unskilled types of work that included doing laundry, cleaning, and carrying bags. Willsie Lee McKinney was an African American who got a job doing housework in a boom town. She made one dollar an hour, which is ten dollars a day, instead of making ten dollars a week where she used to live. The founding of oil has impacted people and jobs greatly. The people that found the oil became rich, so they could now spend their money on wants instead of just needs. More jobs came up like waiters, cooks, and cleaners. These new jobs gave more people the ability to work and get money. With these new jobs, people can gain even more money than what they used to. (Doc
