Soccer: The Most Popular Sport Around The World

Soccer is played around the world in many different countries and is known as “futbol” outside the United States. The oldest soccer club in the world is Sheffield, which is in South Yorkshire, England. This soccer club was created in 1857, 6 years before soccer rules were even created. When the rules were finally established in 1863, there were 11 teams. (“9 Oldest Soccer Clubs in the World”.) Soccer is the most played sport around the world and is watched and played by at least 1.3 billion people around the world. Half of those people are kids under 16 that are playing for fun and competition. ( Alegi, Peter Christopher. "Football.") The first ever professional soccer game played was in 1863. If you get caught using drugs in soccer, you will either be arrested and you will be suspended from your team. Youth soccer is becoming more and more popular in the United States. Soccer is more popular now than it ever has been. Soccer participation is 30 times higher now than it was just 40 years ago (umbel.com) There are a variety of soccer clubs and teams in the United States for kids. Kids can play on school teams, recreational teams or competitive club teams. The competitive clubs tend to travel more and play teams from different cities or states. Recreation soccer is less competitive and is more for fun. (“What Is a Soccer Club? ­ Thunder Soccer Club.") American football may be the most popular sport in the United States but soccer is quickly catching up. It is already the number one sport in the world and soon will be in the top 3 in the United States with the creation of the MLS league.
